This year, as they do every year, children across Britain and the world are writing their letters to Santa. But for the children we work with, they are asking for him to bring their mummy or daddy home.

Their parent has not passed away, nor have they separated – they are being forced to stay away from their children simply because they do not earn enough and the damage on the mental health of the children and the parents is devastating.

Recent child-centred interviews that we commissioned to Coram Centre for Impact lay bare how children are the biggest victims of this cruel policy which impacts every aspect of their life including:

  • The MIR and spouse and partner visa rules caused children worry, stress, uncertainty and anxiety:
  • Financial strain: Children felt very aware of the extra financial strain on their family. Often this meant parents working long hours, children going without things their peers had, or the family not being able to visit the country their parent/s lived in or where they grew up.
  • Some children even reported trying to earn money themselves, to help with visa costs

Whilst a present will never replace the joy of having their mummy or daddy with them again, the gift is symbolic of a society that understand how wrong it is to do that to children and families. The hostile policy has pushed many families into poverty; made many families unnecessarily reliant on a single wage or the benefits system; pushed families into single parenting and causing untold mental health impacts on children, parents and grandparents.
